Your accommodation may be magical, but so is the town. It will captivate you with its charm and is literally on your doorstep. The main shopping area of this ancient market town is flat, so you won’t have to huff and puff to carry your hot bread home from the artisan bakers! There are delicatessens, a fishmonger, and enough independent shops to browse in for the most ardent shopaholic – all niche and interesting.

If you can tear yourself away from the town, you’ll realise you’re right on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Pull on your walking boots and take yourself off onto heart-stoppingly beautiful countryside. Climbers, horse riders, walkers, there’s something for every active person and of course there are hidden hostelries nestling in tiny villages that will beckon you for a pint on a hot day, or a mulled wine when the autumn kicks in.

If you’re a beach bum, then you won’t be disappointed. You’re no distance from the South Hams, with Salcombe, Dartmouth Torbay,  and more. They, like Mothecombe, Bantham, Bigbury, Wonwell have glorious golden sands to lounge on, or take your windsurfer out.

Bring out the hippy in you and enjoy the quirky and delightful hill town of Totnes, which has a market on a Friday and Saturday where you can buy anything from great street food to second-hand clothes and probably be serenaded by a didgeridoo or bagpipes by one of the local characters. The buildings are out of a filmset, the shops mainly independent so no Starbucks here.

Little ones will enjoy one of the nicest interactive animal farms. Pennywell is just up the road, as is the River Dart Country Park and other attractions that the whole family will enjoy. Just 30 minutes’ drive west is the maritime city of Plymouth, which, like Exeter has a mass of culture and arts as well as museums, great restaurants and more.
